Today's walk in the Wedgwood and Ravenna neighborhoods was not very well planned - it ended with hills and up-staircases - but it did have its rewards. It was a warm, sunny day and I appreciated all the vegetation and ...
... some shady sidewalks.
Thirteen years ago, I remember thinking that Fremont would win the prize for the neighborhood with the most produce growing in gardens and parking strips but I think Wedgwood now offers competition.
Wedgwood also has quite a few staircases like this one at 77th and 28th that took me down to the private Wedgwood Swim Pool and ...
... Dahl Playfield with its wading pool, playground, skate park, and ball fields.
There is a small commercial corner at 25th and 75th that houses a dance studio, a nail salon and a pizza store.
Venturing into a small corner of Ravenna, I noted writing in the street. It said "We got this Seattle - Black lives matter".Back in Wedgwood and close to Lake City Way, I spotted a large apartment house and townhouses looming over the single family houses.
A closer look showed me the housing that has replaced the trailer park that had been here for years.I wonder how affordable this housing is.Walking into the development, I discovered a small playground with a colorful mural painted on the retaining wall that separates it from Lake City Way.I also discovered what I think is a new a new loop street. I had not ventured in when this area was a trailer park.
The development, named Ravenna 88, has 87 units (but it is on NE 88th Street) and is tidy ...
... even if parking seems tight.
Leaving that development, I meandered until I crossed Thornton Creek at 86th and Ravenna.
Over near Wedgwood Elementary, I noted "Move Seattle" stamped in the newish sidewalk.Near Wedgwood Swim Pool, a dead-end street lead to a footpath ...
... which lead to a staircase. This 7 mile walk was intended to cover streets I had missed on a prior walks. I passed University Prep which is expanding, Wedgwood Community Church which will rent rehearsal space to music groups, Spooner Berry Farm's stand which was sold out today, Wedgwood Presbyterian Church which houses NEST, Wedgwood Elementary and Eckstein Middle Schools which just closed for the summer, and six Little Free Libraries. I could have learned about Bible stories, pregnancy, childbirth, nature, leveraging the private sector to help the environment, the medical complex, getting into and paying for college, getting what I want in life, and Queen Elizabeth the First, or how to think positively about my body. Or I could have just picked up some children's books.
