Today's walk in the Meadowbrook neighborhood revolved around Jane Addams Middle School and its ballfields. I was surprised that there are still very few sidewalks along many streets near the school.


The neighborhood is hilly and what it lacked in sidewalks ...

... it made up for in trees. I hope this remains the case even as multiplexes are appearing on more and more lots.

Walking along 28th Avenue NE just south of 113th Street, I saw this stand of trees ...

... then this entry to a path ...

... which let me through dense vegetation ...

... to an exit onto 27th Avenue NE where someone had placed a rope in case walkers needed it to pull themselves up the steep end to the trail (which today was muddy with few good footholds).

Out on Lake City Way, I passed a few pot shops, car and tire lots, fast food and healthcare places and this sign for the now closed Bigfoot Carwash.

The sinkhole in back of the carwash may have closed some businesses but Kelly Cannoli is still open and having bagels overnighted from New York!

Along this 3 mile walk, I passed two Little Free Libraries; one had mostly novels, the other mostly children's books...

... but it also had a few pins - one celebrating Seattle as a UNESCO City of Literature.

 Once again, Wallingford was the location of an enjoyable walk. Starting near Golden Oldies on NE 45th Street, I admired the murals ... ... on both sides of the building. Just across the street was Dick's and ... ... I noted the the entire block behind Dick's had been demolished. I wonder what will be going up there. Walking south of 45th, I filled in streets I had missed on prior walks and came across quite a few tree-lined streets. Houses varied from small bungalows to large, stylish homes with the majority being somewhere in between.  Most houses and gardens were well kept. A few had been replaced by townhomes and I noted two that were boarded up, probably awaiting replacement. I saw a street mural and vegetables growing in the swags along the curbs. Twelve and a half years ago I started my original blog ( walkingseattle.blogspot.com ). It took me four years to walk every public street in the City of Seattle. During Covid, I have continued to walk many streets in my neighborhood. Now that it feels safe to ride public transportation again, it's time to revisit many more neighborhoods and see if they have changed. My first walk was in the Cedar Park Neighborhood and, I suspect, its changes will be mirrored around the city. This is quite a mixed neighborhood with the western portion abutting Lake City Way and the eastern portion overlooking Lake Washington. The easternmost streets are entirely residential, probably comprised of single family homes but one small townhouse development appears to have been built, maybe in the last 10 years.  My husband and I did pass walkers, dog walkers and gardeners in this area. The new Light Rail station has really impacted the Roosevelt neighborhood. Older single family homes are rapidly being replaced by large apartment complexes. Sidewalks that once looked like this ... ... now look like this. I noted four proposed land use action signs. One was to build a car dealership; one was for a 5-story apartment building with 57 units (14 parking spots); one was for a 7-story apartment building with 243 units (166 parking spots) and retail; one was for a 4-story townhouse building with 36 units (18 parking spots). This last one was in a tree protection area and the sidewalk trees were fenced. I also observed a number of large vacant lots where buildings had recently been demolished. There were a lot more permitted parking areas and not too many free parking spots. There were a lot more bike lanes, some even had their own "push to turn on warning light" buttons.
